Culture collection (CC) centres are the custodians of microbial diversity and play a key role in the storage and supply of authentic reference microorganisms or other related material for research and development. Veterinary Type Culture Centre (VTCC) under the aegis of Indian Council of Agricultural Research is a step in this direction to establish a repository of animal microbes.

Veterinary Type Cultures facility is at present housed at National Research Centre on Equines, Hisar. It is a national biological resource center whose mission focuses on the acquisition, authentication, production, preservation, development and distribution of standard reference microorganisms, cell lines and other microbial resources for research in the Veterinary and life sciences. It was approved and sanctioned in 2004 to serve as a national repository and distribution center for cultures of microorganisms of Animal importance. Recently, a process of establishment of this Microbial Resource Center (MRC) has been flagged off by the exemplary vision of Council. This process is of paramount importance, not only from the point of view of protecting the gene-pool and conservation of our country's this subset of microbiota, but also for supporting National Veterinary Science research, development and Animal Biotechnology programmes.

VTC plans to serve India by characterizing, microbes of animal relevance /significance; as well as developing and evaluating assays and techniques for validating research resources and preserving and distributing microbial biological materials to the public and private sector research communities, as per rules. In order to rise to the aspirations and expectations of our nation, emphasis of VTC is on need to customer satisfaction, value addition, economic operations and competitive benchmarking for all areas of the endeavor.

In addition to serving as a bio-repository and distributor, VTC envisages to provide specialized services related to its overall mission as a Microbial Resource Center. One of the mandate area is HRD in the area of biological repository management services.

VTC plans to develop into a global leader in research and development expertise for identifying, characterizing, preserving and distributing a wide range of cell lines and animal microbes.
